This is my third entry because I skipped a week, having not found a mentor. So, technically this is the class' fourth entry, but my third. I'll use the class numbering system from now on...
I met with Tim again at Starbucks and we started working with Drupal some more, installing modules and organizing a project that I’ll be working on, a photo contest site.
The site will involve users signing up, paying $1 to submit photos to the site, and then voting on the quality of other members’ photos. Once the voting period is over (probably a two month period), the winning three entries split ¼ of the pooled money, and the rest goes to charity (I’m thinking about partnering with the Nobelity Project, which would be really cool).
The scope of this project is larger than any other I’ve undertaken, and hopefully it will teach me a lot about web design and development, as well as dealing with partners, deadlines, and expectations of a normal project.
Right now, I plan to finish the site by the end of November, and begin collecting donations during Thanksgiving. The contest will run until the end of January, and then the winners will be awarded their prizes, and the money given over to the Nobelity Project. After that, the grading cycle will begin again—another fundraiser.
I think the unique time cycle of this event will generate publicity, and a partnership with the Nobelity Project would be immensely helpful in securing enough money to build it up.
I plan on also contacting other sponsors to help promote the event, and in the future, partnering with other charities and non-profit causes so that users can select which charity they want their dollar to go towards.
